Aquaculture
Marine aquaculture is a process that has been developed due to technological advancement to primarily breed, raise, and harvest aquatic organisms. This includes fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants for human consumption. This is similar to farming on land but in underwater habitats such as our ocean’s waters.
Since the start of marine aquaculture, it has provided a consistence source of economically and environmentally sustainable seafood that is rich in protein and nutrients. Although marine aquaculture is mainly used to satisfy human consumption, it is also utilized in other ways such rebuilding populations of threatened and endangered species, replenishing wild stock, and restoring habitats. It also contributes to other commercial products as well such as jewelry, fish meal, and cosmetics.
World aquaculture production has continuously increased throughout the years, and it will continue to grow. The power needed for a marine farm is consumed by lighting, nutrient, and waste disbursement, feeding systems and other equipment depending on the type of marine farm. These farms are usually powered by diesel generation, which causes harm to the air and water quality, but the farms could be powered by renewables.
